In September 2024, gravy was among the Reser's products recalled after a refrigerated trailer malfunction created a spoilage risk. The affected truckload reached one distributor but never reached shop shelves.

In September 2024, gravy was among a range of Reser's products withdrawn after a refrigerated trailer malfunctioned in transit, creating a risk that the load had spoiled.

What happened

A refrigerated trailer carrying the products failed to hold temperature. Because chilled prepared foods depend on continuous refrigeration, the entire load was treated as a spoilage risk regardless of whether any individual pack showed signs of deterioration.

The company said the affected truckload had reached one distributor, but that the products never made it onto shop shelves. The recall was therefore a precaution executed inside the supply chain rather than a withdrawal of stock already in customers' kitchens.

Why gravy in particular is at risk

Chilled gravy is close to the worst case for microbial growth. It is:

  • low in acid, so nothing in its chemistry inhibits bacteria;
  • rich in dissolved protein from meat stock, an excellent growth medium;
  • high in water activity, unlike a dry or heavily salted product;
  • already cooked, so it carries none of the "will be cooked before eating" safety margin that raw ingredients have.

Those same four properties are why the domestic advice on this site is so insistent: gravy belongs either hot or properly chilled, and never lukewarm for hours. See keeping gravy warm and make-ahead gravy, which gives 3 days chilled and 3 months frozen as the limits for home-made gravy, with rapid cooling in between.

⚠️ Watch out

The domestic version of this incident is the jug of gravy left out on the side after Sunday lunch and put in the fridge at bedtime. Cool it quickly — decant it into a shallow container — and refrigerate it within two hours.

What a precautionary recall means

No illness was reported in connection with the load. A recall issued on the basis of a temperature excursion is a statement about risk, not about known harm: once the cold chain is broken, there is no practical way to prove a given pack is safe, so the load goes.
