The Gravy Finder matches what you are eating and the ingredients you actually have against every gravy on the site, ranking the ones you can make right now first.
The Gravy Finder is the practical companion to the rest of the site. Instead of reading an article and discovering at step four that you need cider, you tell it what you have first.
How it worksΒΆ
- Pick what you're eating. Sausages, roast beef, chips, biscuits, a nut roast, or "anything".
- Tick what you have. Everything from pan drippings and plain flour to Worcestershire sauce and black coffee.
- Set any dietary filter β vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free.
The Finder then scores every gravy recipe on the site against your selections. A gravy built specifically for your dish scores higher than a general-purpose one; a gravy whose essential ingredients you all have scores higher than one you are missing two of.
Results come back in three bands:
- Make it now β you have everything essential.
- Nearly there β you are one or two ingredients short, and it tells you which.
- Shopping needed β good match, longer list.
Each result gives the method inline and links to the full article.
Worked exampleΒΆ
I'm eating: sausages I have: onions, beef stock, plain flour, butter, Worcestershire sauce
The Finder returns Proper onion gravy first β every essential ingredient present, and it is a gravy made specifically for sausages. It also notes that the Worcestershire sauce you have is one of the optional extras that will improve it.
Why "nearly there" results are shownΒΆ
Because knowing you are one ingredient away is more useful than being shown only what you can already make. A missing item that turns a decent gravy into a very good one is worth a trip to the shop, and the Finder tells you exactly what it is.
TipΒΆ
Even with only flour, butter and a stock cube the Finder will find you something respectable β see simple everyday gravy. Tick the cupboard staples generously; most people have more than they think.
